About Dr. Annette Kenney
Dr Kenney believes in healing the body from the inside out. She believes in getting to the root cause of disease and preventing and even reversing it when possible. She knows that inflammation is the underlying factor for most chronic disease, our environment drives our genetic expression, hormones are the master signalers, and that health starts with the life inside of us-our microbiome. She also knows that none of it matters without emotional and mental health, that gives us the desire to care for ourselves in the first place. It is her desire to provide realistic, constructive guidance on your journey to optimize your health.
A note from Dr. Kenney:
A medical career, though rewarding, doesn’t necessarily lend itself to healthy living. Back in the day, when I was going through training with small children, no one talked about work-life balance or quality of life. It was all about working long, hard hours—end of story! After years of living a productive, but unhealthy life, I found myself an unwell person. My journey back to health, while practicing medicine has framed my understanding of how best to help patients. Though not recognized fully by the medical community as important, I taught my patients how to exercise and eat healthy. I got extra training in personal training, exercise physiology, endurance exercise, genetics and nutrition. I remember standing in front of a research crowd in 2005 and comments being made that research had not shown that talking to patients about diet and exercise made any difference. Well, it did make a difference in the health of my patients! And now, the research does show it. It takes 17 years on average to translate research into accepted medical practice. I wish we could have innovation at the speed of information. However, medicine doesn’t work that way. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bias and self-interest that is infused into “science”. There are many in medicine who work tirelessly to assure the consistency and quality of medical information. There is an approximate doubling of medical information every 3 to 5 years, so it’s not an easy task!
I was trained as an allopathic physician in conventional medicine. I do not want to diminish in any way the progress and value in conventional medicine. When you have appendicitis, you need emergency surgery. When you have pneumonia, you need antibiotics. And, when you are in severe heart failure, you need an intensive care unit. However, many doctors know very little about achieving or maintaining health—even their own! I remember attending a conference with my physician colleagues years ago. I was at a booth testing out a medical device that measures fitness. The saleswoman said, “You are very healthy for a doctor. I have never seen such an unhealthy bunch.” How ironic! We doctors are suppose to be guiding patients with their “health”care and we don’t know how to take care of ourselves? It has been my quest NOT to be that kind of doctor.
I believe in personalized medicine. When you help a person reset their metabolism for optimum function, find and replace genetically driven deficiencies, balance their hormones if needed and develop healthy lifestyle habits, you help them find health.
“Illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue. They are developed from small daily sins against nature. When enough sins have accumulated, illnesses will suddenly appear.”
“Even when all is known, the care of a man is not complete because eating alone will not keep a man well; he must also take exercise. While possessing opposite qualities, yet work together to produce health.
